Barney Helps Gary Read the Paper

Luckily this chair is extra wide so Barney can help Gary read the paper. Barney is more like a dog than a cat, he follows us around where ever we go in the yard or the house except when he is napping. Notice we have a throw over the chair to contain the cat hair. It can easily be thrown in the washer to be cleaned.

This year he is finally using the cat house we made for him last year. Until recently he just looked in. I guess now he realizes it's just for him. We have the cat house on the front porch where the screen room is. The cat house has insulated panels in the floor, walls and ceiling and is set up off the ground. If the weather is cold he likes the house but if it's hot he likes the woven lawn chairs. He does come in at night; but during the day he likes to be out of doors. If Barney wants some wet cat food he scratches my pant's leg. He has us pretty much trained to his liking now. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

    1. Hi Lee, thanks, I was beginning to wonder if we had wasted our time building that house, he doesn't go in there very often but perhaps this winter he will. We let him out of the house when we go away during the day so hopefully if he is cold he'll use the house more often. we shall see.

    1. Hi Suzi, thanks, Barney is so endearing, I can't imagine how he must have felt being left here by his owners, hopefully he feels secure with us. We only worry if we should have to sell what would happen to Barney because he is one cat I don't think would do well moving from here.

  4. My cat has to squeeze into the chair, too, but he does.

  5. Things don't have to be large for a cat to squeeze into... that's for sure. As for the outside house, it's great that it's there in case the weather is cold and you're not around. However, we've found that not many of the feral cats will go into an enclosed space. We do leave blankets on the outside chairs, put hay around, and even resort to heat lamps if the weather is below freezing.

    1. Hi Rian, thanks, it's taken Barney over a year to actually go in the house and not have one foot on the outside, I think he was afraid of being trapped which is probably the same for the feral cats near you.

    1. Hi Marguerite, thanks, he is sweet but when he wants his food, his claws are sharp, more like a kitten's claws, ugh

  7. Barney is lucky to have been adopted by you. So sad that his previous owner left him behind.

    1. Hi Michele, thanks, the previous owner lost this house and perhaps he didn't have a place to take him to is what I am thinking, and our next door neighbors probably told him they'd feed him. We thought about selling and traveling around again but I just can't leave Barney again, perhaps that's why he is here, to keep us here.

  8. what a lucky cat... we built a dog kennel for our Aussie Terrier when we had her and it took her ages to use it.

    1. Hi Anna, thanks, last year I kept putting his wet food in the back of the house and he's still keep one leg out of the house, I think he must have been locked up somewhere one time and is afraid of that, now he finally trusts it I guess. ha.
