Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Last night I watched the movie Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World an epic historical drama. The plot is adapted from three novels of Patrick O'Brian. During the Napoleonic Wars in the early 1800s, the captain, starring Russel Crowe, of a British warship is charged with capturing, burning, or sinking a French privateer frigate. The film was nominated for ten academy awards and won two, best cinematography and best sound editing.

Scenes from the movie take place almost exclusively at sea sailing around Cape Horn, briefly stopping near mainland South America to obtain supplies. Later the ship stops at the Galapagos Islands for exploration and once again for the medical treatment of the British ship's physician, starring Paul Bettany.

Spectacular oceans scenes in calm waters and severe storms were juxtaposed with intimate glimpses into the hardships of sea travel and the difficult decisions a ship's captain had to make on a moment's notice. The movie suspense-fully held my attention for the three hours it ran and it's rated PG-13. Another movie I highly recommend. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.
