Shishito Peppers

Apparently the latest delicacy in gourmet restaurants is shishito peppers. I've never had them but decided to give them a try. I found these at the farmer's market on Saturday.

 I was going to grill them outside but the wasps were buzzing around so I decided to use my cast iron frying pan. Supposedly one in ten is a hot pepper so I grilled the green ones first. Gary said he got one hot green pepper.

Then I tried the red ones because the green ones were so good. Two in ten were hot in this batch but they were delicious.

I made a dipping sauce of yogurt, lemon, garlic, and dijon mustard. These are a great appetizer. Brush with olive oil or sesame oil and grill, delicious. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  2. Hi Sue, thanks, I have never seen them but I was watching a cooking show and they used the shishito pepper so that's how I knew the name, they are Japanese, there is a Spanish pepper that is supposedly similar called padron.

  3. Sounds really yummy! Not sure if we can get them where we are, but the supermarkets do usually carry the larger green and red peppers here (at an eye watering price!!), and we occasionally treat ourselves to them. I like the sound of the dipping sauce, and might give that a try, it would be nice with other things too. I can imagine it would also work quite nicely with grilled fish.

  4. Hi Peter, thanks, sad that peppers are so expensive where you are, they are practically a staple here, I tried growing some this year but not much luck for some reason.
