Curved Top Butter Dish

Here's a curved top butter dish. I used a open weave vegetable plastic to make the texture; it's more subtle than most textures.

After I used the template to cut the clay, I removed more clay from the lengths, so disregard my measurements. We got more than three inches of rain from Hurricane Nate and it was much needed by the native plants. We also had some wind but no damage, thankfully.

I sincerely hope folks don't deface statues of Columbus which I read about in the news. In NYC police are having to guard the Columbus statue twenty-four hours a day. I am sure their time could be better spent helping prevent crimes. Here I am with Native American heritage and I still don't think Columbus or any other statues or monuments should be defaced. All of these statues and monuments are part of our history. We should learn from the past and from history, not try to destroy all memory of it. If only these folks would spend their time and money doing some good instead of causing damage and destroying public property. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Those who ignore history are bound to repeat it!
Nice butter dish. Subtle texture can do some wonderful things with glazes.

  2. Hi Suzi, thanks, I agree, I am hoping to use some celadon colors; these butter dishes take a bit of time to make but as I make more I hope to increase my proficiency.

  3. Good looking start for butter dish. I've tried throwing the sides of the top, and will be trying to adjust it to the oblong shape today. Wish me luck there! Happy Columbus/Indigenous Peoples Day!

    1. Hi Barbara, thanks, I was wondering if a butter dish could be thrown? I think the native americans need their own day.

  4. Almost perfect. I would leave off the side handles (get knocked off to easily) and no lip on the bottom dish. The tiniest up-curve, but not lip. Thanks for working on this.

    1. Hi Joanne, thanks, you are right about the handles and they might not fit in the slot in the fridge either, I'll try the flat bottom maybe with a slight lip and perhaps a depressing for the lid to fit in if I can manage the measurements.

  6. We hand-built butter dishes at one workshop last year, Linda. I'm sure someone could throw them on the wheel (possibly in sections?), but not me.
As for the 'statue' thing... (IMO)there really are more important issues in the world to think about.
