Four Baby Rabbits

Once when I was young we lived in apartments. Behind the apartment building was tall grass. In the summer maintenance crews occasionally came and mowed the tall grass. After the mowers left I discovered four baby rabbits out in the open. I looked around for the mother rabbit but she was nowhere to be found. The baby rabbits had escaped the wrath of the mowers but were exposed to the hot sun and defenseless where they lay.

I decided to gather up the baby rabbits and take them home. When I got home my mother said they were too young to save but I wanted to try. I fed them warm milk from a doll bottle, I kept them in a cardboard box and kept it clean. Each day I brought fresh grass for them to see if they'd eat it. The baby rabbits got bigger and one day they started to eat the fresh grass I'd brought. After a few days of feeding them fresh grass I decided they were big enough to let go. I took them back to the same place I'd found them and released them. They all hopped away.

I painted the white rabbit above in a meadow. While I was looking at the painting deciding improvements to make, I remembered the four baby rabbits from long ago. Since it's the first day of the month it's white rabbit day. White rabbit to you all. I hope good luck comes to you all month long. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  2. Hares and rabbits. My first mother-in-law and her sister used to say this to each other. The first one said hares; the other replied with rabbits. New Year’s Eve was always a contest to see who could call first. Oh and for the charm to really work it had to be the first thing said on the day.
That is a is a sweet little bunny. He would look terrific on your pots.

  4. Hi Anna, thanks, I was reading that baby rabbits don't often make it and that the mother leaves them unattended during the day, never knew that till now.
