What About a Bird's Nest ?

All the birds and the bunny made it through the firing. As I was glazing the birds (which seems to take forever), I thought each bird might look nice displayed in a box with some excelsior like a nest.
Or if I had an antique soda box I could put a nest in each pocket with a bird. This would be an easy way to transport the birds to the farmer's market. Hum, with some rustic wood and a nail gun or stapler I could make my own display box.
Then I thought maybe I could put them in a small pinch bowl with some nesting material. But I think the bowl would distract from the bird.
So I've been looking around the internet for ideas on bird's nests. I could try making a bird nest. I came across the cocoa fiber nest above with a tutorial on how to make them.
Now I'm thinking I need to make some ceramic eggs to put in other nests. Making the natural shape of an egg probably isn't as easy as it seems. I never lack for ideas. Please don't hesitate to suggest any ideas for displaying the birds or for making birds nests!
I just remembered I found a real bird's nest when we lived near Mount Lassen.
I keep the nest in a cat tin. Not sure where this is at the moment. Probably in some drawer. Yesterday on facebook my memory photo was of Binky eight years ago lying out by the pool in Florida. Binky's been gone for four years now. How time flies. Boy does my mind wander. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. It's spring, building nests is happening all over the place, so you might as well do a try at it too. But I think the first idea of the old soda crate with just excelsior in it would work...you could kind of pull it up so the birds are at the top of each nest while on display, then push them down for traveling.

    1. Hi Barbara, thanks, that's exactly what I was thinking, so I wouldn't have to wrap up each bird individually.

  2. And one more idea. I have a porcelain artist friend who makes similar birds. One would not sit upright. Rather than sand the bottom flat, she made it a nest. I do not know how she made it, but she used clay like angel hair pasta and draped it into a nest. There ya go!

    1. Hi Joanne, thanks, she probably used an extruder; I have a mini one I have used before but if you asked me where it is right now, I couldn't tell you. Ha.

  3. I particularly like the fibre nests and they would be a great 'hook' at markets.

    1. Hi Sue, thanks, I could only get rafia locally and I would have preferred coco fiber but the pale rafia the birds will show up much better I think.
