Time For A Muumuu

Hearkening back to my youth in Hawaii I starting thinking about how comfortable it is to wear a muumuu. I had a favorite muumuu back then which my mother couldn't get me out of, even to wash it. With the Florida weather being what it is, I decided it was time for a muumuu to wear during the hottest part of the summer.

Low and behold I found muumuus at the local Bealls Outlet Store, which is pronounced Bells here in Florida. I was going to purchase a muumuu that very day, but the clerk mentioned I could get 15 percent off for a senior discount on Monday, so I went back that day instead. The price was less than material would have cost and I didn't have to sew the muumuu myself. I was so happy to find a muumuu I bought two, so when one is dirty I can wear the other one.

The best thing about wearing a muumuu is air can circulate up underneath your clothing which keeps a person much cooler in hot weather. While we're talking clothing, cotton underwear are the only way to go in humid climates, no rayon, no polyester, only cotton or similar natural material which breathes. My new muumuus are 100 percent cotton and are being washed and dried separately right now (just in case those bright colors run) and to remove the sizing to make them softer to wear. I can't wait to wear my new muumuu.

Another attire change was brought about by my recent muumuu purchase. Some of you may recall a number of years back I mentioned I developed plantar fasciitis, which is a painful foot condition that makes it nearly impossible to walk. After building a many tiered, rock wall on a steeply-sloped property, my feet were never quite the same. When you get to be my age, it's all about comfort. So I took to wearing these ugly black Marci style shoes by Dr. Scholls which have good arch support. Gary calls them my old lady shoes, but I'm able to walk comfortably and my feet don't hurt any longer.

Anyway the thought of wearing those ugly black shoes with my new muumuu was just a bit much, even for me. So I bought a pair of Crocs in a beige and white Patricia sandal style, which actually has some arch support and they fit my wide foot. Oh boy I'm in tropical heaven now. Some of you may think I'm an eccentric dresser, but I'll be cool as a cucumber while those around me wearing jeans will be sweaty and miserable. Give these apparel tips a try, you just might like them.

Oh, Gary likes Hawaiian style shirts and I found three beautiful ones at the thrift store (one pictured above). All three are 100 percent cotton, brand new, and cost three dollars. Outlet and thrift store shopping is one way to beat the high cost of living nowadays. We're going to be quite the pair in our tropical attire, don't you think? Up next these tropical prints unexpectedly influenced some tiles I made.

  1. I love it. You've been Floridized. It's complete! And I do understand the comfort of loose fitting clothing.
Cheap, full, cotton skirts are going to be more of my attire in the summer now. I'm not quite in the Muu Muu belt here, but comfort is essential. Thrift stores here don't yield much worth buying, but when I'm in Texas I visit them and always find something that's comfy to wear . Love the shirts, too.

I look forward to seeing their influence on your tiles. Fun.

  2. Hi Teresa, thanks, oh good morning, it's kind of like we're having coffee together, talking about what to wear on these hot summer days, I am kind of thrift store junky, it's the thrill of the hunt I guess. Yes the comforts of summer are welcome with this heat.

  3. Hi Meredith, thanks, I forgot this morning, darn and I remembered last night.

  4. i love the colors of those muumuus. i have plantar fascitis too, mine seems to come and go. last year i had a flair up after moving. i attributed it to wearing flimsy flip flops to work in the studio all day. i switched to croc, they are too wide for me but have more cushion to them. right now i have just one foot that bothers me mostly in the morning.

  5. White Rabbit! I guess it counts if I said it while awake at 2:30 a.m. Because Hub forgot this morning. We've been doing well with the white rabbit thing since learning about it from you Linda. Love your colorful muumuus. Wow, such a deal on those shirts at the thrift store. When I go, I never find bargains, walk out disappointed and don't go back for a long time. I think one has to go on a reg. basis. I never wore Hawaiian shirts in my life, till moving to Texas, now in summer that's what both hubby and I wear. Cotton ones are hard to find, most are rayon.
I have foot issues too, and just bought some new Skecher sandals, the "shape-up" ones that I don't believe that marketing on, but they are comfortable, and LIME green so I had to have em.

  6. Lookin' good, Linda! Love all your purchases - drooled over those Crocs. Didn't realize they came in anything other than the lumpy ones. I'm off for the hunt this weekend -

  7. You two are going to be adorable! When I lived in Myrtle Beach all the ladies on our street wore muumuu's except my mom, I think they had the right idea, best thing in the world to fight the humidity in the south!

  8. Haven't thought of muumuus in ages. Think they should come back.
Even after you reminded us, I forgot the darn rabbit.

  9. Great finds! I live in muu-muus, except mine are sleeveless, with skinny straps, when I'm not at work. So comfortable and cool. And thanks for reminding me that I need to buy some Crocs, like yours!

  10. Hi Michele, these crocs are different than the regular ones, they actually had several different styles in the store. I think good arch support continuously really helps the plantar fasciitis.

Hi Barbara, thanks, yes that counts, here I remind folks and I forget. Ha. I am amazed at what I find in thrift stores that has never been used before. One shirt says manufactured by T shirts of Florida, but made in Thailand, the other two say Puritan made in Bangladesh and all three are 100% cotton, I was surprised at the 100%. I saw those shape up but they were really expensive so I passed on them, plus they didn't have wide width. I have wide at the front of my foot and narrow at the back and high instep, so very hard to fit into any shoes. Lime green is cool. I got beige cause it goes will any color.

Hi Kittie, thanks, yeah they had several sized of crocs, haven't looked at any shoes other than those Scholls for over 7 years, so any shoe is new to me. Ha.

Hi Tracey, thanks, folks living in the tropical areas know what's best I guess. Ha.

Hi Patti, thanks, yes I am going to start a new fashion trend, Ha.

Hi Marguerite, thanks, I got ones with sleeves to keep as much sun off my skin as possible, I guess there is a reason folks in the deserts cover their bodies with white fabric. Hopefully these crocs work for me without back and I can wear them for a period of time without my feet hurting, we shall see.

I love suggestions, questions, critiques, thanks for your comment
