Why This One

I was glazing this morning and noticed what I thought was a small piece of slip flaking off the painted lady lidded canister. On closer inspection I see a whole piece of clay was just about popped off. The middle has some black specks on the inside like there was some kind of debris in the clay and a small amount was powdery substance. Maybe there was a little piece of metal in there or something.

Anyway why this one, it took me so long to make this piece. Maybe I'll fire the lid to see how it turns out fired separately. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Isn't that so irritating?! That happened to one of my covered jars recently. I am not sure if this will help but I saw this on Creative with Clay's blog a little while ago. It might be worth a try.

  2. Because if it isn't this one, it will be that one, or the other one.

    But still frustrating.

  3. Hi Michele, thanks, I'll check out the post, but I think I'll just toss this one since I noticed a seam isn't quite right either, darn.

Hi Mary, thanks, I had lots of little square plates I would have been much more willing to sacrifice. Oh well, we don't always get to choose, keeps us on our toes. Ha.

  4. Hi Linda you are probably right to discard this one but that is so hard when you put so much into it. Commisserations :^(

  5. I have found that a pop like this usually means the clay is contaminated. I ended up getting 500 lbs. of clay replaced when I started getting spalls like that on fired work.....fortunately I hadn't sold any of it....unfortunately manufacturers only replace the clay...nothing for time and energy!

  6. It was such a lovely piece that it's a real shame. Maybe you'll feel better if you just consider it your prototype. Much success with those to follow!

  7. Hi Anna, thanks, I put it in the glaze cabinet for now, still thinking about it, it could be a nice dried flower container since it is bisqued. I could spray it with a sealer or something. I'll probably keep it till I build another and then discard it.

Hi Suzi, thanks, a couple of folks aid it might be plaster contamination and not all my wall board are taped on the edges. I am going to tape them all this week to be sure that wasn't it. Have not had any other pops with this clay so I may be at fault.

Hi Ms. Sparrow, thanks, there are things I can improve upon - on this one so you are right it will be a prototype, onward and upward.

I love suggestions, questions, critiques, thanks for your comment
