After I loaded a bisque yesterday I decided to experiment with some chemicals I had from a long time ago. They were stored in little containers and not very well marked. I think they are ochre, cobalt, copper, and red iron oxide.
I made a wash with some water and brushed the mixture on some of my ornaments and a couple of vases. I have no idea what these chemicals will look like after they are fired. I'll probably put a clear glaze over the top.
I broke one of my driftwood handled baskets. Also one bowl had a crack in the rim and one plate was badly warped so those didn't get fired. Tomorrow is a white rabbit day and we're supposed to get snow. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.
Oxide washes are especially fun to use with carved surfaces, as they bring out the depth of carved designs...so try that sometime!
ReplyDeletelittle Christmas test tiles! Can't wait to see the results.
ReplyDeleteWe are supposed to dip down to 29 degrees overnight on Sunday, but thankfully no snow.
Hi Barb, thanks, some of the xmas ornaments have texture applied so we shall see.
ReplyDeleteHi Michele, thanks, we're only expecting an inch, might be fun to see.
Only 54 days til Christmas!!! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Keith, thanks, is that a hint?
ReplyDeleteGood luck. I am really looking forward to ooh and ahhing at the results.
ReplyDeleteHi Sue, thanks, I can't wait but all that glazing has me procrastinating. Ha.
ReplyDeleteHope your glazing turns out well and has happy surprises! Sorry to read that you broke one of your baskets, it is so easy to do things like that I find, especially when loading kilns!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Peter, thanks, I was putting some oxides on the basket and held it too close to the rim; it was the last piece I was working on and I wasn't rushing a little bit I think.
