Crabapple 2018

My crabapple is putting on quite a display this year and the bees are loving it. I can't tell you how much I love this tree. Last year the leaves looked smaller and sparse so at the end of the year I sprinkled a bag of mushroom compost around the base of the tree. I hoped the nutrients would leach down into the soil slowly over the winter. As the seasons moves on I'll keep on eye on this tree to be sure it isn't in decline. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. They are glorious trees. I still mourn the one that someone in our street took a chain-saw to. It didn't die immediately, but it did die.

  2. Hi Sue, thanks, I hate to see trees cut down, they give so many benefits.

  3. What a beauty! Do you get enough fruit to make goodies with them? One of my early childhood memories is my Nanu making crabapple jam.
We are showing very few signs of spring here. My daffodils are starting to bloom at least. On the bright side: blooms last longer in cool weather.

    1. Hi Suzi, thanks, the fruit are very tiny so not even worth picking, I let the birds have them. My childhood memory was eating them in the summer when we lived in Maryland when I was in the 4th grade; they were quite large ones about 1/3 the size of an apple.

  4. How lovely! A neighbor is insisting that bright pink buds on a tree here is a crab apple. She said it had fruit. I didn't see any last fall. I thought it was ornamental cherry or something else. Will be looking in the fall to see if any fruit comes. Glad you're caring for your little tree!

    1. Hi Barbara, thanks, crabapples also come in pink the one I planted next to this one is pink but it only got a few blooms since I pruned it quite a bit to shape it, cherries also have pink flowers and peach and closer to summer hawthorn.

    1. Hi Joanne, thanks, the blossoms fall on the driveway and make a white carpet. I love this tree. All of what I have planted here is doing so well except the rosemary got frost burn and I am hoping will generate new leaves on the bare branches, we shall see.
