Flowers and Fried Beet Greens

Seeing the bright red roses in the ditch yesterday must have inspired me to make a couple of colorful pieces in clay. The upper one is a large platter.

This one is a bowl about eleven inches in diameter. It's difficult to see the depth from this angle.

Yesterday we got up early and went to the farmer's market. One of the items we got were some fresh beets. As we returned home we met our neighbor walking her dog and she said she loved fried beet greens so I gave her some of ours.

I decided I'd try cooking some of the beet greens for us. On my neighbor's advice I melted some butter and chopped up the beet greens. I decided to add some dried basil and cumin. I cooked the mixture till the ends were soft. They were good. I guess they were actually sauteed but in the South that's probably called fried. Ha. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. That's a pretty bowl. I've never had beet greens, but love beets. I guess if you fry anything in butter it has to be good..LOL

  2. Those dishes look pretty. And I have never tried beet greens, but yours look delicious.

  3. Well, now you're a regular Georgia gal. (I'm afraid I'm with your other readers in not having tried fried beet greens, but ahhh the fresh beets!

  4. Hi Barbara, thanks, they taste a bit like swiss chard.

Hi Gigi, thanks, hope they fire up nicely; you might try them they weren't half bad.

Hi Barb, thanks, waste want not with the greens, they were actually pretty good, I'll be having all the beets because Gary said he doesn't like them although he liked the greens, I bet I can get him to try at least one beet.

  5. I am not a lover of greens but eat them because they are good for me. I have to say that beet greens are one of my favorites. We often buy fresh beets when the greens look good. That way we have bonus veggies.
Jeff saute's them in a pan with a little olive oil and garlic.
We are growing beets this year so we have been slowly getting some greens.

  6. love the platter and bowl... will be great for serving those greens!

  7. Love the platter and the bowl - and will have to try fried beet greens. They would probably be good in a salad too.

  8. Hi Michele, thanks, I didn't used to be a fan of greens but lately I really like them, perhaps my body is telling me that I need them or perhaps it's because I have cut out all gluten and virtually all sugar from my diet, no processed food either.

Hi Michele, thanks, oh I wonder about covering up some of the plates with food but might as well make the plates appealing when not covered with food. Ha.

Hi Elephant's Child, thanks, yes they would probably be good in salad I must try that.

  9. The plates and the greens are really pretty. They look like they would go well together at the dinner table.

  10. Hi Lori, thanks, I was wondering about vegetables on top of flowers. hum.
