Sometimes I start out to make one thing and then I make something else. I was going to make a bird with a flower for a top knot and somehow this wall pocket came out instead. I put two holes at the top. I thought I could string some ribbon or leather through the top to hang it up with. Tomorrow is another day to make a bird I guess.
Then I fooled around with some texture on a big round circle. I was going to make this into a flower but I like the flat circle. Of course my extruder broke in the middle and I fixed it three times. Finally I gave up making more of these till I can see what's really wrong with the extruder. Wouldn't you know it, I really like the look of this and wanted to make a whole group of these.
No wonder my college work got warped. I put these flowers on board and now I notice this board has really warped. It's puckered up in the middle terribly. This is new plywood I had cut down. I have some old plywood from some old cabinets that's very thin, much thinner than this and it doesn't warp at all. Seems old wood is much better than new. I think the grain is closer together and it doesn't tend to warp as much. I guess I better get some more wallboard to dry work on. Hopefully I'll have enough dry pieces to fire soon. I'm anxious to do some glazing. Have a good weekend.

ReplyDeleteThe wall pocket is really nice. My grandmother had one in her kitchen. There are lots of fairs in Virginia...at one last year I noticed wall pockets were very popular.

ReplyDeleteWood is not aged or dried as it used to be, that's why it warps so much. Have you tried drying on a rack?
ReplyDeleteit seems you have to go through the whole pile of wood at supply houses to get something that isn't twisted... and then who knows what will happen when you get it home! i have had better luck with wood quality at independently owned lumber yards than at the big box stores. although sometimes you pay a little more.

The wall pocket is great, Linda. I've been meaning to make these one day but am still side-tracked primarily with birds. I also think the circle texture looks great - still looks very flower-like to me despite the injured extruder. How wonderful that your flower power theme is offering so many possibilities to you. Filn the kiln soon! :) I'm looking forward to seeing the finished flowers.

ReplyDeleteI've been using dry corn on the cob for texture on the center of my sunflowers. I saw the technique used in a youtube video. It works awesome. If you get a chance, try it!

ReplyDeleteLovely wall vase Linda, and looks like other commentators like it too! Wood is a problem these days. Sometimes it is so wet that I am sure that it could be planted out in the garden and it would grow into a tree again!

ReplyDeleteI was at a pottery sale yesterday and the artist apoxyed picture hangers (the ones with teeth) to the back of her wall pcokets and the hung great that way, and seemed to just float on the wall. I really like that circle, that would make a great trivit. Look for construction sites near your home for drywall. You would be amazed ow much they trow out. We furnished our whole college studio one year on a new large house that was being built. It was one of those great free things!!!!
Hi Annie, thanks, I have used d hooks on the back of ceramic pieces, but never the teeth hangers, what a great idea, sometimes I think having the hanger hidden on the back is better as you say because they float on the wall as if suspended by nothing. What a good idea to look for construction sites for the wall board, I will definitely be on the lookout from now on. Thanks again.
