Aqua & Orange Painted Lady Lidded Box

Here's a sneak peak at the first painted lady. Now you can see a little of what was in my mind from my post about making some painted ladies. I thought about adding some words, but I like this piece without words. It's aqua and orange and is a large lidded box about 12 x 7 x 6 inches. There are three different ladies in silhouette or cameos and the fourth side has a bird in the frame. I still have touch up to do on the under glazes and stains. It almost seems to be a combination of Art Deco and Asian styles. As I mentioned in the last post, the lid was an after thought but now it's growing on me.

Remember I said I wish I had made feet for it? I could make the same shape as the handle but upside down. What do you think about that idea? Or I could just have square feet. And the feet would be orange. Maybe I'll take a straight on photo and print it out and draw in different feet to see what they look like. I already have many more ideas along this painted lady theme. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. It also has the look of an old time silhouette. You know the ones that were framed, sometimes painted on glass? Your well of creativity is Never going to run dry. Amazing.

  2. The lid is perfect....gives a nice sense of totality...I like the size too. Feet would give it a little lift....certainly worth trying. I foresee a rich line of buildings coming from this one. Good going!

  3. Hi Teresa, thanks, I am truly blessed with a deep well that's for sure, if only I could make all of the things I can think of.

Hi Suzi, thanks, the lid just came to me out of the left over parts, but I like the square parts picking up the square parts of the frames. I am thinking the same thing about a rich line of buildings and lots of different colors, exploring with the colors is great fun.

  4. Ooo, I really like the way this is coming together...that's a good idea about a pic and sketching different feet. I'm making strange containers, without knowing any use for them...but enjoying that that's what clay can do. Keep doing what you're doing. I enjoy seeing your work here.

  5. Ohhh, but smart cat said it all. You've got a great signature line in the making here, Linda. (Hope you run with this great idea!) Perhaps you could add variety and put an animal/bird/fish/whatever in the framed box. I'm kinda odd person out, but I honestly don't think the box needs feet.

  6. Hi Barbara, thanks, yes we should just keep making and the use will follow I think, and each piece leads to the making of another.

Hi Kittie, thanks, I am really excited about these and have several more ideas in my mind, not only animals, birds and fish, but a few automobiles and even motorcycles, more to come for sure. This one won't get any feet because it's too dry now anyway.

  7. I like the idea of feet mirroring the lid. It would give the piece lift and lightness as well as full continuity. Great thinking.

  9. Hi Lori, thanks, yes some lift and lightness might not be bad since it so large a piece.

Hi Ms. Sparrow, thanks, who knows where my mind takes me, thanks so much.

  10. Linda -The 'Painted Lady' is great! I love her in silhouette.

I think you could even make a foundation with wood - but I would try all sorts of feet.

  11. Hi Judy, thanks, I may keep this one without feet and think about feet for future ones. I'd been thinking about these for too long and just wanted to get one in process. The first time I make something I don't think of all the variables, next time I'll be more organized.

  12. i vote for some feet on the next one. i really like the birds and think that a box with just birds would be beautiful.
the colors really remind me of Florida, can definitely see how your environment influences your work.

  13. Hi Michele, thanks, it's always so sunny around here and so many bright colors to see. Some days I swear the sky is actually an aqua color. California was called the sunshine state, but so many places had so much smog it rarely looked blue or felt sunny. Yep maybe some birds and flowers together.

  18. Hi Patti, thanks, yes I hope the colors don't turn out too bright after firing, we shall see.

Hi Meredith, thanks, stay tuned for more twisted and painted ladies. Ha.

Hi Julia, thanks, one of the windows has a bird in it too, each side has something different. More to follow.
