The first thing Gary said about the Monolith is "What is it?" I said, "It's a sculpture, an architectural monolith". Fully enclosed with no real function other than to ponder the world and the universe beyond. The apartment is the same, fully enclosed. The first two were to be part of a totem, but maybe not. I like them as separate entities. Then again I could see several slightly smaller ones graduating up and up, at least for the first one.
The thicker plates turned out great. They are just over 1/4 inch thick after firing and the trays are just under 1/4 inch thick after firing. Although they are thicker than I've made in the past, they are by no means overly thick or heavy, just right I think. Of course I want a set for myself in all different colors, wouldn't that be cool? The bucket, the last piece, was supposed to have overlapping glazes and somehow they didn't materialize, but that's OK, I am not complaining.

Hopefully selling more of my functional work will enable me to pursue the sculptures I feel inexplicably drawn to make. I've been contacted by a couple of galleries wanting to carry my work, more about that later. I'm firing another bisque load as we speak. More pendant results up next but first I have some small delicacies of nature to show you, so stay tuned. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.
I am in love with the bucket! All beautiful work:)
ReplyDeleteThe vines and the floral look great. You should sell lots of these.
ReplyDeletethe plates and trays are beautiful, glad the thicker slabs worked for you.
ReplyDeleteI tried to enlarge the bucket with rope handle but couldn't, I was hoping to see the details of the handle.
just went back for another look and blogger let me see the bigger picture... great textures!
ReplyDeleteHi Kelley, thanks, I love making buckets for some reason, after this came out of the kiln I thought about making a shorter fatter one similar to this. I was thinking a whole group of these would be nice together.
ReplyDeleteHi Lori, thanks, I thought I liked the vine pattern better, but now I like the flower one, picks up the glaze. I am hoping these sell well and hope these can be staple seller for me.
Hi Michele, thanks, I am so happy I finally got some plates to turn out. I have wanted to have some different plates to show off some of my recipes and to eat off of a plate I made in my home for years.
Glad you got the bucket to enlarge, the handle is supposed to look like a rope and the inside and outside are textured to look like wood. A different color for wood might have been better, the overlap was supposed to be brown but somehow it isn't even there, my notes about a previous pot must have been incorrect, darn.
I absolutely adore the lavender and lime plates.
ReplyDeleteI've wanted to make some slab plates for ages and have been following your thicker plate testing.
Hi Cazz, thanks, I wanted to make some plates that were consistent and easy to make to have develop a line of dinnerware both for myself and to sell. I am hope these will fit the bill. I think it's a matter of judging how much the clay will shrink and not making them too thin when they are green as they will shrink. The other thing is I think I was moving them when they are too damp and that contributed to the warping issues. Good luck with yours.
ReplyDeleteI love the lavender and lime plates! And the apartment bldg is awfully cute too. I'm loving your new work!
ReplyDeleteHi Laurie, thanks so much. I am hoping to make up some place settings with these new patterns and colors for a more cohesive look.
