Roly Poly

At least once a week I let myself play around with clay. Out of these playful sessions other ideas spring forth. Yesterday creatures were lurking in the clay. I planned to make a rabbit sculpture and somehow this humanoid rabbit emerged. The face is human like, the base is tree like, and the ears are rabbit like. Hum.

I thought about making a rabbit because Gary and I are always trying to remember to say white rabbit the first day of each month. My inspiration for a rabbit from came from seeing this roly poly rabbit toy. This rabbit has such an endearing look to his face. I thought I could make this shaped rabbit into a bank with a slot in the back and a cork in the bottom.  I might even work with some mixed media, perhaps a felt coat, fabric covered wire ears, or glass eyes. We shall see. One of my plans for next year is to explore some animal and human sculptures. More about those plans later.

More leaves are flying out of the Etsy shop. I have a few more to list in the shop, so I'll try to get those up today. I also have more leaf shapes I'm exploring. Back to the studio I go. This post is part of Mud Colony what's happening in the studio. Check out the next post to see a more realistic rabbit, a bank I just completed. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Hi

Your colorful leaf plates remind me of hashioki, chopstick rests. I think that they are much smaller than yours though.
"One of my plans for next year is to explore some animal and human sculptures" WOW! I look forward very much to them!!

    PS
I love to eat octopus too. Your dishes look so delicious!

Happy Holidays to you, Linda. Thank you so much for reading my posts this year!!

  2. Hi Sapphire, thanks, my pleasure reading your posts, they are works of art in themselves. Some of my leaves are large but some are small suitable for chopstick rests. I must look up hashioki and see what they look like, perhaps I will develop some of those just for the chopsticks. The octopus was delicious warm or cold in a salad and a beautiful color. Happy holidays to you too.

  4. Hi Suzi, thanks, yes I always discover new forms playing around even if the first pieces just sit in the cabinet or fall apart. Ha.

  5. I'm excited to see what you do with the rabbit, or if that bunny is going to multiply.
I love the inspiration rabbit, my brother's favorite stuffed animal as a kid was a rabbit. This one reminds me of that.

  7. Hi Linda...process. That's what your rabbit exploring exercise reminds me of...and I miss thinking about how important it is with all my production lately. Going back to sculpture and animals too soon! (2nd try to post comment, must be my computer ickies again)

  9. Those leaves are simply a joy - which probably reflects my reaction to leaves more generally. Thank you. (And I think you have firmed an idea that has been lurking in my head for a future post.)

  12. He's got a lot of personality Linda! I'm starting a sculpture class next month. It's a four-week beginner class. We are going to do a different feature (eyes, ears, nose and mouth) every week on small tiles.
