In another neighbor's yard I noticed two palms coming back after the hard freezes we had this winter. This one was just emerging in a gray green color. The fronds looked like thousands of arms raised up praising the warmth of the sun. This shape would be wonderful in a sculpture I think.
The other palm of the same type was already opened up and much greener. If you ever have a plant die back due to frost, please don't give up on it till the middle of July. I've actually had plants come back that late in the summer after particularly cold winters. The roots are growing underground gathering up enough energy to put forth their greenery again.
I walked over and touched the leaves and much to my surprise they were soft and feathery like a fern. I had expected them to be stiff and biting like most palm fronds. I'm not sure of the type of palm but they are lovely to see in their various stages of growth. I think cycads have stiff fronds perhaps it's a pigmy date palm?
Happy May Day to you and White Rabbit to you all. I vaguely remember dancing around a maypole holding onto streamers when I was young. I even think I had a crown of flowers on my head. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.
Great Photos. Thanks for sharing. I've never seen a newly emerging palm before. Happy May Day to you too.
ReplyDeleteWhite rabbit to you, and, lovely green.
ReplyDeleteThe shape on that palm is beautiful and would be fun as a sculpture. I love following your creative processes.

ReplyDeleteHappy May Day! Beautiful palm, thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI've always wonder how the May-pole dance is done. It;s not likely I'll ever get to see one.
ReplyDeleteHi Christine, thanks, that gray green color and all those arms really spoke to me, just had to share.
ReplyDeleteHi Meredith, thanks, same to you, lots of nice greens this year.
Hi Turquoisemoon, thanks, I've got to go back and look more closely at the trunk, it was rather thick and roughly textured.
Hi Suzi, thanks, I'm seeing white rabbits running every where for everyone.
Hi Barbara, thanks, yes palm babies what a great phrase.
Hi Jennie, thanks, oh yes some brown ones, I saw my little brown one the other morning again.
Hi Michele, thanks, I'll have to go back and see how that palm is doing.
Hi Ms. Sparrow, thanks, oh I wonder if there is a school near you that might have one of those dances, I am sure it must be something to see in person, the excitement of all the children dancing in unison.
They look like a Dale Chihuly sculpture to me.
ReplyDeleteThat first photo is so interesting ... almost science fiction horror film looking.
ReplyDeleteI love the palm shoots! They look similar to ferns!
ReplyDeleteHi Lori, thanks, I have yet to see some of Dale's sculptures in person, one of these days.
ReplyDeleteHi Willow, thanks, nature does produce some interesting shapes doesn't she.
Hi Midori, thanks, yes I thought they were ferns too but they are palms, they felt like ferns so soft.
