This opossum is a frequent visitor to our deck.
This time when I knocked on the door he didn't run away, he just looked up.
I got brave and opened the door to take his photo and still he didn't run away.
His fur was a little matted because it was raining or perhaps he is shedding.
Here's a good shot of his opposing thumb on his hind foot. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.
He looks completely comfortable with you. And is a very different beast to our possums...
ReplyDeleteHi Sue, thanks, what do your possums look like?
DeleteThis link should take you to a bit about our possums.
Deleteoh your's are so sweet, so different, what a beautiful color they are, thanks.
DeleteDo your cats mind him being around?
ReplyDeleteHi Barb, thanks, my cats to mind him at all and the internet said adult cats are unimpressed and not bothered by possums.
Deleteewwww.... I can't have them around my Lucy.
ReplyDeleteHi Turquoisemoon, thanks, he only comes around at night and late at that so you Lucy is probably inside then, no problem.
DeleteHello Linda,
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing how tame wild creatures can become when they become confident and secure in a routine. Your opossum is an intriguing animal. We have never seen one live.
Hi Jane and Lance, thanks, they are very interesting and they carry their young in a pouch; once when we lived in Arkansas I saw a mother and one of her babies fell out of the pouch. it was very tiny, pink and hairless.
DeleteMany many (back in the early 70's. We had two possums that came to eat with our barn cats every evening. We decided that the cats assumed they were ugly relations, but with acceptable manners!
ReplyDeleteHi Suzi, thanks, the internet said that cats don't mind possum and I've seen him come up and our cats be lying nearby and not even be bothered at all.
DeleteI think your possum is cute. Many think they are ugly creatures. We have had all sizes come by to eat with the feral cats... some quite small. The cats don't seem to mind, but do keep their distance.
ReplyDeleteHi Rian, thanks, I think if provoked they can be mean and bare their teeth which are quite numerous but this one didn't even hiss or act scared of me at all. All the rest of the times he's run off and came back an hour later, this time he just moved a few feet away and then back again, he must have been hungry. I wonder if it's a female would love to see the young when they are following behind or riding on the back of the mother.
DeleteOh goody, you have another pet. You'll have to give him a name soon! How much fun to watch. We had a raccoon who roamed the neighborhood in California. He'd get into people's trash at night. I would usually only see his greasy paw and nose prints on the glass patio door. One time there he was, just staring at me. Everyone called him Rocky of course!
ReplyDeleteHi Barbara, thanks of course Rocky is the perfect name, lol
ReplyDeleteI have seen opossums at the edge of the woods here but never on the porch (unlike the squirrels).
ReplyDeleteWhat a little cutie! :)
ReplyDeleteThese are wonderful photos, and adorable! Thanks for guiding me here Linda, I have thoroughly enjoyed :)
