Returning with the baseboards for the basement room this morning, a baby snapping turtle was crossing the road. I insisted Gary stop so I could be sure he got across the road safely. Now is the time turtles will be crossing the road so please watch out for them. If you pick up a turtle crossing the road put them on the side in the direction they were going because they know which way they need to go. If you put them on the wrong side they'll just turn around and cross again. (I didn't have my camera with me so this baby turtle photo was borrowed from the net).
Perhaps you recall the mother snapping turtle from Florida I helped. Never pick up a snapping turtle because their mouths are strong enough to crack open shellfish and they can snap your finger off with ease. The snapping turtle is easily recognizable from their very long tail. Today we're painting the baseboards and wiping the grout haze off the tile, photos coming soon. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.
We always stop for turtles too...
ReplyDeleteHi Rian, thanks, so glad to hear you save them too.
DeleteFun!!! You just don't see them in the city very much.
ReplyDeleteHi Turquoisemoon, thanks, we're only three miles out of town of course it's a dinky town, lol
DeleteLove that you stopped. And have to ask - how do you move a snapping turtle for its (and your) safety?
ReplyDeleteHi Sue, thanks, for the baby I just waited till he crossed and directed traffic, for the Florida one, a fish and game guy came by right at the right time and he wore thick leather gloves and carried him over, click on the link for the mother turtle to see how he did it, it was fortuitous that he came by at just the right moment.
DeleteWe all need bumper stickers: I Stop to Move a Turtle across the Road.
ReplyDeleteHi Joanne, thanks, yes and it is a benefit to the car driver as well because their broken shells can give a flat tire.
DeleteWhat a beautiful little fellow he is! :)
