Gary's Flower

A few weeks ago I bought a purple leaf canna lily and asked Gary to plant it for me half way down near the entrance to our driveway. He kind of grumbled but he planted it anyway. Ever since then he's been taking care of it making sure it has water if it needs it. He tells me each day how much it's grown and so on so forth. A week or so ago he said he was getting a tall stalk in the middle and I said it's getting ready to bloom. He couldn't wait for the bloom.

This week Gary's canna lily bloomed. It's a vibrant red orange and absolutely spectacular. Gary couldn't be more proud. He's been talking all about how wonderful it is. He even went down to take this photo for my blog. If you plant a living thing or you nurture and care for something and it rewards you with it's growth and beauty that's something to be very proud of. I suspect it's even more satisfying raising children, never having had that opportunity I don't know. I do know raising and nurturing something living is a wonderful life lesson and the best reward in the world. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

    1. Hi Cathy, thanks, for years I tried to get Gary interested in gardening and he could take it or leave it, now every day we go out and sit on the steps near my flower garden and look to see what types of bees or hummingbirds are pollinating the flowers. Yesterday Gary said it's amazing what you can see if you take the time to watch. Ha.

  2. No children here either. A huge love of gardening though. And yes, the blood, sweat and tears involved do pay dividends. And, if I kill a plant through neglect, no-one is going to turn me in to the law...

    1. Hi Elephant's Child, thanks many of my plants are just like my children and if you watch them closely they will tall you what they need.

  3. the Canna Lilies grow well in the Sydney area. They form big clumps and are quite hardy. Gary's looks great if a bit lonely :)

    1. Hi Anna, thanks, we had canna in Arkansas so were pretty sure they'd make it here. His canna will spread and there is actually a green leafed one near by that will also spread and hopefully eventually make a big clump. Our neighbor has lots of them.

  5. Great job Gary! We have a clivia in the house that had never bloomed since it's move to NC. Last year it bloomed in the new house, and again this year. Jeff and I are like doting parents!
