Wayne Rollins Planetarium

Practically in our backyard is a planetarium, the Wayne Rollins Planetarium, at Young Harris College. Thursday we went as a group with the Blue Ridge Mountain Jeepers to see two shows. The Led Zeppelin cosmic concert was a psychedelic extravaganza. Loud music such as Stairway to Heaven, Over the Hills and Far Away, and Black Dog and fantastic special effects led us on a surrealistic journey of sight and sound.

Solar Quest provided an intriguing glimpse into the sun and earth relationship in the cosmos. The show described the impact of space weather on the earth and how the earth's atmosphere and magnetic fields protect life forms on our planet. Aurora Storm gave a scientific and cultural exploration of the aurora borealis. Causes of the aurora and how the lights have inspired various cultures in polar regions. The show is narrated by two Athabaskan Alaskan Natives.

In the early 2000s we lived in Northern California and saw the northern lights one evening. I'll never forget the eerie lights. At first Gary and I both thought it was a forest fire because of the red and green lights. Later we realized the aurora light as a natural phenomena. The last time I can remember going to a planetarium was a visit to the Morrison Planetarium in San Francisco. If you have a planetarium near you I highly recommend a visit. The planetarium show was both humbling and inspirational. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  5. In NH I was fortunate to be fairly close to two planetariums, the Hayden at the Boston Museum of Science, and the McAuliffe- Shepard Discovery Center in Concord, NH. Many years ago I went to the Hayden to see a Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon show. It was awesome.
