First hardy gardenia blooms of the season.
Their fragrance permeates the humid air.
I had no idea there were hardy gardenias till I moved here.
They have a narrower leaf than the not so hardy ones.
Gladiolas I planted last year are blooming.
Last year they just produced leaves.
In all these years this is the first time I've grown gladiolas.
This was a mixed group, can't wait to see what colors the others are.
Thanks for reading and for all your comments.
What a beautiful flower. I did not know about hardy gardenias. I have a feeling they would not survive this far north.
ReplyDeleteHi Suzi, thanks, I took a chance on them when we moved here trusting the label at home depot saying they were hardy. Then this summer a plant guy told me about the leaves, we got down to 6 F in winter; they look a little desiccated in winter but do keep their leaves. Once it warms up they are bright green again; I do love the fragrance and would just like to wear a garden on my lapel to enjoy that fragrance all day long.
ReplyDeleteDH loves gardenias! And we've had white gladiolas out front by the front walk for years. They only bloom for a short time and they're the only "flowers" in front - but they do look nice albeit for a short time (and they do come back!)
ReplyDeleteHi Rian, thanks, I do love gardenias too, my mom loved them; do you have to stake your glads? mine are leaning but probably searching for the sun since we have some shade. I know that florists sell them with color but not open I suspect they last a long time in a vase.
ReplyDeleteI must look out for hardy gardenias. I adore them, but have given up attempting to grow them after too many deaths.
ReplyDeleteHi Sue, thanks, the do need humidity and I have mine planted facing south and ground cover cloth and bark mulch which I think keeps the ground from freezing as bad.
ReplyDeleteThe beauty of Nature...it's all around us. We just have to remember to open our eyes/minds and appreciate what it has to offer...for free! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Lee, thanks, yes even the weeds are beautiful, lol.
