Elevated Cat Bowl, Pinch Slab Coil

You may recall Barney, our cat, appeared at our home the day we moved in and we adopted him. He has ingratiated himself into our lives and we cater to his every whim.

Barney isn't getting any younger so I decided to make him an elevated cat bowl so he doesn't have to crouch to eat his food. I had some red clay left and I told myself I couldn't dip into the new clay till I finished using all the old clay.

I didn't measure so I'm not sure if the height of the cat bowl will be correct. Barney isn't a tall cat. I used pinch, slab, and coil to make this elevated cat bowl. On the inside I put a coil because when Barney eats wet food it slides around and around when he is trying to eat it. I surmised if I placed a few ridges that would help in that regard. We shall see. The beauty of a ceramic bowl over metal or plastic is that they are heavy enough not to slide around on the floor when the animal is eating. That holds true for cats and dogs.

This vase is the last of the red clay. I read today a toddler was found clinging to his dead mother's body in the floods near Beaumont Texas, that's one of the saddest stories I think I've ever heard. I'm reminded every day to be thankful for what I have. Life can change in a minute. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. My cat eats and drinks from hand thrown bowls. I took little from the old kitchen, but I took those. Cats deserve good stuff, too.

  2. Linda, our cats also have both hand thrown as well as wheel thrown bowls. I made Molly one with her name on it for her 20th birthday. So yes, Barney deserves his own special bowl.

  4. I'll be interested to hear if Barney uses the higher bowl. Remy and Shama, my two furry rascals will be 15 years going on 15 months this coming November.

They eat from their bowls on the kitchen floor, but drink water from a tankard-size glass mug that sits permanently on my/their bedside table!! :)

    1. Hi Lee, thanks, we shall see if he uses it. one of my old cats Binky used to drink coffee from a cup by dipping his paws in the coffee and licking it. I used to think he liked the cream in the coffee but when my sister in law came to visit she left her cup sitting and he drank from that one too. I guess he liked coffee.
