Fall is the season every creature prepares for winter. For the hummingbirds I planted pineapple sage which is naturally triggered to bloom by the number of daylight hours.
The blossoms begin as drooping buds. later they rise to provide hummingbirds food. Amazingly this slightly tender plant has made it through the winter, probably due to being planted under ground cover cloth and heavily mulched bark. It's slow to start in the spring so don't give up hope on it too early.
These plants reach 3 to 4 feet in width and height in a season so they're wonderful plants to grow for fall interest in the garden as well as food for nectar feeders like hummingbirds. I'll be at the Blairsville farmer's market today from 7 am to 1 pm. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.
I really really need to replace our pineapple sage (which was killed by a frost a few years ago).
ReplyDeleteI hope the markets go well for you.
Hi Sue, thanks, I read that hummingbirds prefer pineapple sage over most other plants; the market was slow to start due to cool weather but it ended up being a good day.
ReplyDeletethat's a nice bright flower... I hope you can post some photos of the hummingbirds... glad your markets ended up being good.
