Man with a Pipe

Man with a Pipe
@ 10 x 11 inch wall hanging

The first is the revised one; I changed the eyes and took out some of the smoke from the pipe. I may take out a little more smoke. No telling how many layers these have.

Haven't gotten around to painting Gary yet but will soon. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Hello Linda:
We rather like the abundance of pipe smoke which merges into the beard in rather an interesting way. Whatever, both 'portraits' show real expression and character.

  2. Actually, I rather like the extra smoke in the first one but this is splitting hairs as both are extremely nice. I also enjoyed your previous post - the second photo of you looks so real. I looked to see what the problem was with the neck but didn't see it. Full disclosure: I know nothing about pottery except that I like it!!

  4. Hi Jane and Lance, thanks, I was wondering if a pipe would give off that much smoke, not sure. Perhaps it was that it was mostly black smoke and I wanted some that was more gray. Hum.

Hi Kitty, thanks, well that's two for more smoke, Ha. I might have to put more back in.

Hi Anna, thanks, I have been putting him off because his face looks like it's going to be difficult to do, we shall see.

  5. Nice portrait! Only a suggestion of smoke---so not to distract from his wonderful face?
Love seeing that they are clay tiles, too.
I read your prior posts and love your self-portrait. Hope you plan to do more!

I know of an art collector and historian who only collects portrait pictures and only head/shoulder view. He has full walls floor to ceiling and it is fascinating.

  6. Hi Charelene, thanks, I am now thinking I should have had wisps of smoke trailing up in the air instead of pounced smoke. I'll work on that.

I am amazed that I am fascinted by the human face at my ripe old age for the first time ever in artistic career. More to come for sure. Thanks so much for your encouragment.

  8. Hi Judy, thanks, I took a painting class in acrylic last year, just a six week class, but I wasn't in the best of health then. Now that I started doing these I am re-thinking about painting. Somehow I might not have been ready last year to delve into painting wholeheartedly; I'm blending colors more and feeling more free with that. Thanks so much for your thoughts.
