Made $280 In One Hour

So far we made $280 in one hour at our yard sale this morning which helps pay bills. I put out a few pieces of reasonably priced pottery, but most folks are buying tools, mops, brooms, shovels, garden items, and building materials. We're downsizing our possessions in the hopes of traveling again some day.

Sadly three different people loosing their homes came by looking for items to re-sell at flea markets. One guy said he tried to contact his mortgage company and was referred to a foreign number; no one at that number speaks English and he's been unable to communicate with them. Please see my post Subcultures of America. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. sad but true that you can make more money selling your stuff than art these days.
I was amazed at the things bought and sold and the money taken in from the sale of Lee's stuff and I still have more.
    I should bring it there!

  3. Hi Meredith, thanks, we're selling cheap enough, other folks can buy and re-sell and make a few bucks so it's a win win. We'd rather stay here, save on gas rather than take stuff to a flea market. We still have lots of stuff left over from our last home remodel.

I wish I had been out there when the three folks said they were loosing their home I would have given them a piece of pottery (in a kind and gentle way). I think clothing will sell well too. Every time I drive by a thrift store the parking lot is packed, the malls and other stores have only a few cars, except the grocery and Lowe's

  4. Hi Tracey, thanks, yeah what a bummer, that guy used to work for a pool contractor till the company went out of business and he has a high mortgage he can't afford. I think he said the country was Yugoslavia? Morgages are often sold once you get it and so you may have no idea who may hold your note eventually.

  5. wow, $280! you inspire me to have a yard sale. i have been meaning to for a year. i just hate the thought of setting it all up being out there in the early morning, because we all know the yard sale crowd likes to get an early start.

  6. Hi Michele, thanks, I hate setting it all up too. We put it all out the night before and cover it with a tarp, we put an ad in that said 8 am to 12 noon and we didn't have any early birds this time. It's cooler now and Floridians are cold blooded. Ha. This one has been slower than previous ones though and we sold one big item that helped raise the dollars high.

  7. I once made $500 in an hour. Then the printer ran out of ink....

  8. And you've found an innocent way to make that much, good job...

  9. It saddens me to hear of people losing their homes. Lots of homeless people in Hawaii! Glad your yard sale did so well. Congrats, Linda!

  10. Congrats on the successful yard sale. I am always amazed at how much can be made on things we basically find worthless.
Times are hard and will probably get harder.

  11. More and more people are buying used instead of new. With this economy we can't afford to through away good money on something when we can reuse something for a faction of the price.

  12. Great that you did so well at your yard sale! When I lived in Maryland, I used to have one every season, and would sell coffee, crafts, baked goods, and sandwiches, on my front porch, too! Have a great weekend!

  13. Hi Dennis, thanks, darn, a printing job would have been much easier than setting up and taking down of a yard sale.

Hi Mary, thanks, wish I could think of more innocent ways. Ha.

Hi Gigi, thanks, I think there are lots of homeless everywhere.

Hi Patti, thanks, well none of the stuff we sold was worthless, just something we will never use, it amazes me how much stuff we have collected.

Hi Pamela Jo, thanks, I guess my Gary said most of the folks were going to resell the stuff. We need to find out where they are reselling it and go there to make more on our items as we can use the money.

Hi Marguerite, thanks, well I'll have to try selling baked goods and such at the next one, what a good idea.
