Speckled Hen, Linda Starr
Stoneware, Cone 6 oxidation
7.5 x 7.5 x 2.5 inches
Here's the hen sculpture I was inspired to make after seeing the wonderful chickens Meredith makes. Some of the slathered slip is a little sharp, I'll pay better attention to that next time. I'd like to make one of these hens with different colors of natural clays and slips and no glaze at all. This one has stains and underglazes and a satin clear fired over those. The bird is hollow and open on the bottom. I was going to add a hole in the point of the beak to be sure it didn't explode. I forgot to put the hole but I lucked out and it fired just fine. I'd also like to do a pit fired hen. I was thinking it might be nice to see how they all looked together.
Thankfully my computer was fine, the computer guy had to uninstall Google Chrome and reinstall it. So I'm busy taking photos and uploading them today. Tracey had professional photos taken of her work and the set up had backdrops, mirrors, and lighting extraordinaire, can't wait to see her photos. Maybe I can find a professional photographer that will do a trade out or something. I'd love to see what some of my work would look like photographed by a professional. I'll have to work on that. Thanks for all your comments, I really appreciate them.
Really cute chicken!
ReplyDeleteHi Melissa, thanks so much, I want to make more now that I know this one turned out.
ReplyDeleteNice! Cluck! Cluck!
ReplyDeleteHi Suzi, thanks, there can never be too many chickens. Ha.
ReplyDeleteWasn't this chicken in the most recent kiln shot? It's really cute, glad it came out well.
ReplyDeleteHi Lori, thanks, yes it was just in this weeks firing and I did a blog post about it when I made it, slathering on the colored slips, underglazes, and stains. I was worried about the method of construction, putting two slabs together, and not putting a hole in the top portion somewhere, but it did fine.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad your computer is OK. Not having access can be really scary.
ReplyDeleteHi Ms. Sparrow, thanks, I keep my fingers crossed that this ancient thing doesn't fall by the wayside.
