Tone on Tone Christmas Tree

This was going to be a tall tower but somehow it turned into a tone on tone Christmas tree. The tree is about 12 inches tall. I've left a hole in the top for steam to escape during firing. Maybe I'll make a star topper to insert after firing. I've made a plate (drying separately) so the tree could effectively hide a secret treasure. Perhaps milk and cookies for Santa Claus?

I've drizzled the creamy beige underglaze thickly and randomly over the top. I debated whether to add any other colors. But I think I'll keep this one tone on tone. Maybe I'll try another one of these with the underglaze applied around each layer like drifts of snow. Of course I can think of lots of other ideas for various colors and style of trees. This post is part of Mud Colony what's happening in the studio, so check the link to see what other studio artists are working on. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  2. Hi Suzi, thanks, today I was thinking I could make another one and cut out little stars and I could put a candle underneath and it could be a luminary, so many ideas and so little time. Ha.

  3. Linda, love the little tree. And think that the underglaze applied around each layer would give it a 'flocked' appearance. Post a pic of that when you're done. I'd like to see it.

  5. Hi Rian, thanks, I hope it looks like flocking that's what I was thinking, like snow clinging to the branches.

Hi Lori, thanks, maybe a little late, as this one will take quite a while to dry and then I have to fire twice, we shall see.

  7. Loving all this, including the long boat! I really like the tone on tone. It reminds me of croquemboche with drizzle frosting instead of spun sugar. It would be a nice treat to have a tea light or cookies underneath.

  8. Hi Michele, thanks, I quickly made a plate last night but it really isn't big enough so I plan to make a different one for it, something more formal than I previously made.

Hi Charlene, thanks, I hope all these hold together. Oh I just looked up croquemboche, which I was unfamiliar with at least the name, google images has a tone of inspiring photos of the desserts that have inspired me even further, thanks so much for bringing this to my attention. Now I am thinking a larger cake style plate for under might be nice. Oh the places I go with the help and encouragement of my readers.

  15. Hi Joanne, thanks, for some reason I think Christmas should be for the children and their dreams.

Hi Gayle, thanks, yes a birthday celebration too, at the end a special treat could be revealed underneath.

Hi Elephant's Child, thanks, yes I think a star or an angle or perhaps I'll make one of each, will have to get my sculpting thinking cap on.

Hi Carole, thanks, yes it does look a bit luscious like a white cake with frosting dribbled over the top.

Hi Anatasia, thanks ever so much, some of these pieces do look edible, hope it looks the same after firing.

Hi Ms. Sparrow, thanks, well I hope so, thinking of making in them in various sizes.
