Another Armadillo, Sgraffito or not

Nor long ago my armadillo sgraffito plate sold at ArtWorks. Earlier someone else saw my plate and came back to purchase it and it was already sold. Who knew armadillos were so popular. These are nine banded armadillos. Armadillo is a Spanish word meaning 'little armored one'.

Yesterday I decided to make another armadillo in a platter size. I intended to make this one sgraffito but after hand brushing the stains and underglazes, I thought it would be better without the sgraffito. What do you think? There is a lot of variation in color which isn't readily noticeable unless you enlarge the photo. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Two wonderful versions of the same charming little chap. The first one makes me think of Indigenous Australian Art, the second one is more painterly. I would find it nigh on impossible to choose between them. Beautiful work!

  2. Hi Elaine, thanks, well I may keep the second one the way he is, sometimes showing the white enhances the critters.

  3. Loving those armadillos! The second one feels complete. I'd leave that one and make some more!

  4. They are both handsome fellows. Why not make more of each one.. Armadillos are pretty popular here in Texas. I like them, except when I see signs they have been digging in my yard.

  6. No matter what it's all one of a kind, so I say go for it.

  7. One of my neighbors has a large, metal armadillo sculpture on their front porch. Imagine the surprise when people first see that.

  8. I think it looks great without the sgraffito, but like the others commented... make more and do some experimenting!

  9. I love them both. Embiggened I noticed that the second one has a 'knowing' expression in his eyes. He looks beautiful - but not entirely trustworthy...

  10. Hi Suzi, thanks, I added a little foreground and decided to leave it without the sgraffito.

Hi Barbara, thanks, what a good idea make more. Ha.

Hi Barb, thanks, sometimes if I just leave it for the next day I know what to do and sometimes I just over do stuff.

Hi Joanne, thanks, yes that's true they are all one of a kind.

Hi Michele, thanks, well you know me I am always experimenting.

Hi Sue, thanks, I went back and looked at his eye and he does look a bit sinister, like he's watching me. Ha. I hope others notice that in him too.

Hi Pam, thanks, these little critters start taking on their own personalities as I make them like they are developing on their very own.

  13. Hi Sandy, thanks, they are so unusual, when we lived in Arkansas we saw one in winter and he was really cold, I guess they can die if it gets too cold, they seem like ancient creatures to me like the dinosaurs. I'm going to keep them as they are and make a few smaller ones.
