An Old Barn

Here's my acrylic painting from my class a couple of weeks ago. I wasn't able to go last week because I was firing the kiln and this week my neck was too bad. I changed the edging around the barn to include some shrubbery and worked on the trees. The trees on the right look like they're leaning to the right. Every time I take a photo of this painting I see something else. I might call this done though. I like the old barn. I always have liked old weathered wood buildings. If you want to click back and see the first section of the painting, click here.

I wonder if I can buy household molding and make my own frame or is molding different than framing wood. I don't have a router but I do have a compound miter saw. Hum. We shall see what I can come up with. I've seen a lot of painting nowadays without matting and the frame going right to the edge of the painting. What do you think? Update I found several ways to make frames on Pinterest. Will be trying my hand at these this weekend. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Most construction molding does not have the rabbet along the edge that your painting would fit into. ( nothing to catch the painting) If you use something like 1x2 up on edge like a shadowbox you can tack a small molding inside it to hold the painting and backing. PS I think the bushes help the barn a bunch

    1. Hi Dennis, thanks, when I looked at the sites that have the frames, they are adding the shadowbox piece on the outside. I'll have to practice to see how to construct them. thanks about the shrubs, the original photos showed black around the edge of the barn, I think they used to do that to prevent termites before pressure treated but it looked distracting in the painting so I changed it,

  2. Love your barn.
And old and weathered wood more generally. It has infinitely more charm than more 'modern' building materials.

    1. Hi Sue, thanks and they formed so many more carpentry details even in barns than they do now

    2. I've not really used it for a while myself...but I should do so again. I found it extremely helpful and I learned so much from it. There are some wonderful artists, in all fields, who frequent the site. And they willingly offer their guidance.

I'm glad you finally did as you were told, Linda!! lol
