To fit more work in this bisque firing I added extra shelves. It's difficult to see them but they are smaller shelves on the left side of the kiln. One has the small bowls and the other has the flat trays. In the photo below you can see how I've tucked in the posts to fit these two smaller extra shelves. It's like working a puzzle fitting work in a kiln. Each time work is loaded it's a different puzzle. In a bisque load work can touch, but in a glaze load work cannot touch. If it did the glazes on two pieces touching would be glued to one another. Not good. I'd like to purchase two more corelite shelves but they's about $60 each. Hopefully I can afford them one of these days.
I fired on Sunday and all turned out ok. It was all completely dry, thank goodness. Yesterday and today I am spending glazing and Wednesday I hope to fire the glaze load just in time for the market on Saturday. You might know it, it's supposed to rain. It's a covered market but many folks don't come out in the rain. Ugh. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.
Looks great! I would love to have a kiln at home... and a pottery wheel! (maybe one day) Right now going to the studio at the school and using theirs works well. How large is your kiln?
ReplyDeleteHi Rian, thanks, I have the Skutt 1222 which is more wide than tall, since I am short I wanted a kiln I could easily reach into. I noticed this year I am having a hard time reaching the bottom, I guess I am getting shorter. I had this same kiln in Florida and I do like the size, the only thing I regret is I am limited to about 18 in in height and sometimes I'd like to make something really tall. Skutt is a great kiln and the tech support is super; I highly recommend them. I noticed a significant increase in the quality of my work when I got my own kiln. When I lived in California I found a used Skutt for $75 and was happy with that but then we moved so I didn't get to use it that much. Keep an eye out on craigslist or on fb there is a group called Potter's Attic where folks sell their used pottery items. I sold my used wheel to help pay for taxes last year so I guess that's the end of trying any wheel work for the time being. Hand building keeps me plenty busy.
DeleteThat looks so interesting, and utilizing the space too, very organized :)
ReplyDeleteHi Denise, thanks, it's all trial and error, believe me, lol.
ReplyDeleteYes, you need those new shelves...perhaps earmark some pots as the ones that will pay for them! You are making beautiful things!
ReplyDeleteHi Barbara, thanks, yeah I need those shelves, hopefully sales this saturday will help but it's really going to rain, darn it, they advertised a lot for this sale. We shall see.
ReplyDeleteHello and came over from Elephant and read your story of your lady music.
ReplyDeleteWow kiln I have 2 but haven't use them for ages.
If you have time stop in for a cup of coffee
Hi Dora, thanks, welcome, two kilns, I am surprised you haven't used your kilns, the opening is so exciting after the glaze fire, keeps me motivated in life.
