Osmanthus Goshiki

Have I ever mentioned I love plants. As a 10 year old child I gathered wild violets and divided them over the winter. By Spring we had so many plants my mother said I'd have to give some away. Needless to say many a neighbor received a plant for their windowsill. There aren't many arboretums or public gardens I would ever pass by. Even in Winter, for relaxation I stop in at nurseries just to look at the plants.
Recently I visited a local nursery and was intrigued by this plant, Osmanthus Goshiki, commonly called false holly due to the shape of the leaves. Goshiki translates from Japanese as five colors. New growth comes out as pink and then turns to green speckled with cream, gold, and grey. Mature plants also produce fragrant flowers in the fall. The nursery only had one plant, of course I had to add the plant to my garden.  If I had a choice between a new blouse or a plant, you know I'd choose the plant. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. This is a gorgeous plant...I agree completely, you had to take it home. That reminds me, I have a violet that is crammed into a pot. I love the word Goshiiki.

  2. Hi Barbara, thanks, I just might have to make a plate with a painting of the leaves and call it Goshiki as to my ear, as well, the name sounds beautiful.

  3. I am so with you about plants. I have almost total sales resistance - except where books or plants are concerned.
Your latest purchase is a beauty.

  4. Hi Sue, thanks, my pocketbook is my only resistance, which is quite strong most of the time due to the limited amount left in the wallet after necessities.
