Biting Flies, Stinging Red Wasps

It's a war in the garden, biting flies and stinging red wasps abound.
Earlier this week I was bitten by a biting fly.
With a biting fly you can't feel their bite
You discover you're bitten later in the day when the bite starts to itch,
you scratch it and then the bite exudes healing liquid.
It stopped itching so no problem. Right ? Wrong !
A week later I have a small red scab
with a red swollen patch about 3 inches square
and a huge knot below the skin.

Day before yesterday walking on the deck to water my vegetables plants
I placed my hand on the deck railing and instant pain.
I shook my hand and discovered I'd flicked off a red wasp.
Next day my whole hand was swollen and painful.

Both bites are on my dominant right hand/arm
which is what I use for everything, cook, eat,
but more importantly to make pottery.
Running low on stock. We shall see.

Welcome to the summer of 2021

  1. So sorry about your bite and sting. I hate being bitten by insects. Luckily mosquitoes don't like me (?). But they love DH and my daughter. We wonder if it's blood type or what that causes this. Right now with all the rain, the mosquitoes are everywhere... and my daughter in the hill country is being bitten by red bugs (chiggers)!

    1. Hi Rian, thanks, I can't complain too much because I rarely get bit but when I do ugh and here I have been catching the red wasps on the screen room and letting them go, lol, we are getting the rain yesterday and today, lots of it

  2. Ouch. I am sensitive to the bites of many insects and come up in humungous red welts. I feel for you.

    1. Hi Sue, thanks, both of these were so unexpected they say when it rains it pours, and it's also pouring rain here too.

  3. So sorry you have to put up with the annoyances of summer.
We have had such a wet winter and spring that we are experiencing a Summer-Of-The-Bug

    1. Hi Lee, thanks, and to think I was capturing them and letting them out of the screen room, well I guess the sting is their natural defense so can't really blame them.

  6. Wasps seem to sting for almost no reason at times - and they can sting again and again. Deer flies will soon be a real annoyance here.
