Finally my new kiln has arrived. It's a Skutt 1222. I ordered the kiln from Daven's Ceramic Center in Atlanta and two guys from there came and set it up for us. We both have rotator cuff problems and bad backs so it was worth it to have them set it up. This kiln is four inches deeper than my previous kiln which will allow me to fire some taller pieces.
I set to work putting kiln wash on my new kiln shelves. These shelves are corelite and are very light weight which makes loading and unloading the kiln much easier on me. It's been raining with thunder and lightening so I'll have to wait to do the first test firing till later in the week. Skutt recommends firing the kiln with kiln furniture and nothing else for the first firing to burn out any residual impurities left from the manufacturing process. Then I'll be set to fire up some work. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.
What a beauty ! I think my next kiln will be a wide one. Easier to load and plates fit better.I don't make much over 20" and if I do, I have friends.
ReplyDeleteHi Dennis, thanks, oh this wide one is so nice, that was the same width as my last one and it fits a lot of work, I only had one piece that wouldn't fit in the kiln and I do have folks around here that can fire taller pieces it's just the transporting that's sometimes a problem.
ReplyDeleteHow exciting to finally have your new kiln! Keep us posted.
ReplyDeleteHi Rian, thanks, I can't wait, greenware is clogging up and tucked into every nook and cranny of my studio.
ReplyDeleteLooks impressive! Carry on.
ReplyDeleteHi Joanne, thanks, love it, carry on. Ha.
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHi Melissa, thanks, hope it stays that way, we are now thinking of partially enclosing the lower patio area to protect the kiln, one more project.
ReplyDeleteOh my. Exciting times ahead. I bet your fingers are itching...
ReplyDeleteWhat a beauty! And the shelves! I was looking at them at the local ceramics store in Berkeley. They are light but sturdy. Happy Kiln firing.
ReplyDeleteOh wow - how awesome! Can't wait to see the creations :)
ReplyDeleteHi Charlene, thanks, they are light but expensive but sometimes the cost is worth it to avoid a future back injury.
ReplyDeleteHi Keith, thanks, I cant' wait either.
Happy new Kiln Daze! You must be so excited to finally be firing in your own studio!
ReplyDeleteI hope you will keep us updated about your shelves. I've been looking and wondering about them!
A happy day indeed...and I'm thinking all your decisions will make more art come from your fingers to the world...which is what it is all about, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteOh, wonderful! I'm so jealous - a bright shiny new kiln! I'd not heard about those lightweight shelves before. Good to know!
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful, shiny, and new! You sure will appreciate the light shelves. I couldn't place shelves on the back stack of our kiln for about 6 months after my shoulder injury. I was worried that I would never regain that strength.
ReplyDeleteHi Suzi, thanks, I had these same shelves in Florida and I loved them. I can pick them up with one hand they are so light yet they are just as sturdy as regular shelves. They cost more but with a bad back or just to save from getting a bad back I think the cost is well worth it.
ReplyDeleteHi Michele, thanks, I loaded the kiln today for the test fire and I had no trouble setting them down in the inside, I am just a tad short reaching the shelves into the bottom of the kiln but I think the added four inches will be well worth it since I can fire more work in one load and will be able to put in taller pieces.
Hi Cynthia, thanks, these are great shelves, anything to save the body in pottery is well worth it I think.
