Fresh Popcorn

One of the last farmer's markets someone was selling fresh popcorn still on the cob. I decided to get a couple to see if using fresh popcorn made a difference in taste.

At the farmer's market there was a man with a machine which would remove the kernels off the cob but I decided to do it myself at home. Using my thumb nail I figured how hard could it be. Many, many minutes went by and a lot of damage to my thumb nail till I finally had one cob picked clean. How would you remove the kernels from the cob? The kernels are tough as nails and really cling to the cob.

One cob makes a very large bowl of popcorn. Several weeks later I used the other cob of popcorn. I can now say I've done it, but never again. I'll get my popcorn in a bag from now on. Ha. It was good but I couldn't detect a difference in taste. As I'm looking at the cobs of popcorn now perhaps one of those paint can openers would work to remove the kernels. What do you think? I won't be testing that theory though. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Sorry, I don't have any tips on kernel removal :-(
We pop a lot of popcorn around here. I have found that when I first open a jar of Orville's it pops up light and puffy. When I get to the end of the jar it pops a little denser. I guess we need to eat it a little faster!

    1. I used to eat a lot of popcorn but that popcorn I got at the farmer's market was the first time in a long time. Gary says it gets stuck inhis teeth so he doesn't it it any more so if I make it I have to eat it all. ha.

  2. Oh how many times I've told myself "how hard could it be" only to find out, I should have let someone else do it. Ha Ha I have never removed popcorn from the cob. Don't really make popcorn much anymore, I do love it though, buy a bag already popped once in awhile.

    1. I like the fresh popped corn with real butter on it if I make it but it had been years.

  3. I suspect that a sharp knife would be easier on your hands...Is popping corn different to other corn? Ignorance on display here...

    1. I have gone to the google oracle, and yes it is. It is still early here (just after six) and I have already learnt something. A win.

    2. Hi Sue, thanks, I am not sure why I didn't check with google but I tried several implements of destruction at the time and the best I could come up with was my thumb

  4. I was preparing a fresh corn cob last night for part of something I was cooking, I just used a small knife. I'm not sure if the corn would have popped afterwards though as the knife may have sliced through the end of the corn where it is attached?

    1. Hi Peter, thanks, these kernels are hard as rocks for the popcorn, the fresh corn on the cob comes off easily with a knife which I like doing rather than eating it off the cob. Ha.

  5. I hadn't even considered real people might shuck corn, so I looked it up. The directions say twist the ear in opposite directions, like wringing out a cloth. I understand it comes shucked, in nice plastic bags. My kind of pop corn.

    1. Hi Joanne, thanks, well I'm not getting any more fresh to try this technique but even the cob was hard not sure it would have twisted of course it's been a couple of months now.

  6. I'd wondered how shucked corn would be as pop corn. Thanks for doing all the hard work and sharing. I'll take your advice and buy pop corn. That house in my header is a French farmhouse in Normandy. There were quite a few thatched houses in the area. But I loved how the upper windows gave this house more interest.

  7. I've always used a knife to remove the kernel from the cob but only on fresh corn.

    1. Hi Lori, thanks, at the time I think I tried the knife but the kernels were so hard I was afraid the knife would slip and cut my hand so I plucked away at it.
