The other day when I was working at the gallery the woman I was working with mentioned she had some tomato cages and since she is moving to near Savannah she didn't want them. She asked if I wanted them and I said yes, how fortuitous. We didn't bring ours from Florida since they are so awkward to pack.
I got the tomato cages put up just in time because three of the plants are already two feet tall. In the picture above you can see we have wired the cages to the retaining wall to keep them from blowing over. When I heard all the rain that Texas and Oklahoma had was coming our way I thought, oh no, the tomatoes are going to be over watered. I rigged up some plastic tops in hopes they only get a small amount of rainfall. This clay soil really holds the moisture.
Here's the Black Krim tomato already setting fruit.
Here's Mr. Stripey with a couple of young fruits.
Here's one of my strange plastic toppers for the tomato cage, hope it works. It's been pouring rain all night long and more rain is expected all this week.
After our jeep club party yesterday we learned vandals poured nails at each driveway entrance all along the road. We all went out and picked up as many nails as we could. But several of us got nails in our tires anyway. We were one of them and our tires are brand new. The sheriff was called and came to make a report and he sent out the road department to see what they could do. Why would anyone do such a malicious thing? Thanks for reading and for all your comments.
I hadn't heard of keeping the rain off tomatoes in that way, I hope it works for you, I know they can split as they grow if there is too much rain. I expected you to say it was to keep the frost off the young plants.. As for the nail droppers.. who knows, there are some strange ones out there... would insurance pay for your tyre repairs?
ReplyDeleteHi Anna, thanks, those covers are just something I rigged up, working a little but kind of windy, so who knows; insurance has such high deductible isn't worth making a claim plus then they'd raise our rates. Sheriff is looking for the perpetrators
ReplyDeleteI'm expecting a Jeep club would have some pretty expensive tires. Some people just suck.
ReplyDeleteHi Dennis, thanks, we got ours for a bargain but I saw some pretty gnarly tires on some of the jeeps. We are hoping the sheriff finds the perps and they have to make restitution. The sheriffs around here are pretty good so we shall see. Gary is at the tire repair shop this am. The tire was flat this am so he had to air it up to get there.
ReplyDeleteYoung vandals. I hope they are found. Years ago we had a neighbor boy who was involved in such stuff. He grew up just fine, but we had a rough patch there.
ReplyDeleteHi Joanne, thanks, Gary used to do vandal type things when he was young but out grew it. Luckily we got our tire fixed for free where we bought it.
DeleteGreat idea with the little umbrellas for the tomatoes. I'm so sorry to hear about the nails hate-crime...for that's what it was, even if someone thought it was funny, it was hateful.
ReplyDeleteHi Barb, thanks, yes very hateful, if they had to pay they'd think twice about what they did.
DeleteI’ve seen the plant covers that look like an old pioneer wagon but not like these. I’ll cross my fingers for your tomatoes and mine.
ReplyDeleteHi Lori, thanks, I have made those covered wagon covers, in fact today I am making one for my seedlings. I am not sure how well that little cap did for the tomatoes but better than nothing.
DeleteWhat a horrible thing to do. The pranksters are probably clueless as to how much tires can cost.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter, who lives in New Haven Ct, said that the city had planted petunia in containers all along her street. They lasted one day. When she was walking her dog in the morning someone had stolen all of them!
Hi Michele, thanks, I hope someone had a camera and the petunia thief is caught, that's unbelievable and all the work it took to dig them up too.
ReplyDeleteI am really glad that you didn't have to pay to have your tyres fixed. Hiss and spit and vandalism. All of it.
ReplyDeleteHi Sue, thanks, luckily the place we bought the tires agreed to fix them for free.
