Screen Room

The upper screen room is finally installed. The one white section on the right hand side is the down spout which Gary couldn't reach. We built our own frames for the screen which makes the installation much less expensive. We also found discount building material supply houses with new wood materials and screen doors with discounted prices.

For comparison here is what our home looked like when we purchased it a little over two years ago. No lower solarium and no upper screen room and the decks have been refurbished. It pays to take photos of before and after to remind yourself of how much you have accomplished and where all the dollars went.

Here is the interior of the screen room. To the right you see the cat door we installed for Barney. It has a clear flap door. Barney is quickly learning how to use the door. For the daylight you see under the screen door we plan to attach a rubber sweep to keep the room bug free.

Here's the view to the other end of the screen room. Since the screen room is built into the existing deck railings there are sections that aren't quite square. We are pressing in strips of insulation into thin gaps to be sure there are no spots where insects can enter. We enclosed the bottom half ends solid but kept the front lower section screened so when we sit down we can still see the view below and off in the distance.

Gary thought he might want to put a bed on the porch for a nap in the summer. We'll see if we can fit something there without the porch being overcrowded.. Meanwhile our next project is a new roof, photos coming soon. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. You have done an amazing amount of work on that house. A screen porch is wonderful. When I was a child, my father built a screen house to enclose the picnic patio. My baby sister called it the scream house.

  2. I love your aqua chair! I imagine a daybed wouldn't take up too much space. A nap on the porch... how wonderful is that?!

    1. Hi Michele, thanks, our doors are painted aqua, I got that aqua set at a flea market when we moved here, there are two chairs and a table to match, they were handmade by some handy woodworker with the wagon wheel sides and the table has a wagonwheel shaped top. maybe a roll-away bed we keep in the adjacent bedroom closet, the closet is large enough to accommodate one, hum.

  3. The screened room looks lovely and I think it is an excellent idea to put a couch there to take a nap on when it is warm enough to do so.

  5. Linda, the house looks great. And I love the screen porch. We used to sleep on a screen porch at my cousin's in Mississippi in the summer time. Great idea!

    1. Hi Rian, thanks, I think a sleeping porch is quite a romantic notion, probably used more in the past if folks didn't have air conditioning.
